Identify five assistive technologies and describe their application.  What will the future student computer look like?

  1. Five assistive technologies are: adaptive keyboards, digital keyboards, voice recognition, screen readers, joysticks. Adaptive keyboards = bigger keys. Digital keyboards = click the screen; tell the keyboard what to type. Voice recognition = tell the computer what you want to do. Screen reader = reads the screen to you. Joysticks = alternative to standard mouse.
The future student’s computer will look very different from ours today. I imagine it will be very thin, touchable, voice recognition, interactive, etc.

    1. Five assistive technologies would be a hearing aid, foot-mouse, teletext, wheelchair, and alternative keyboard. A hearing aid allows the hearing impaired to hear some words and sounds, a foot-mouse allows for students who are unable to use their hands and arms properly are still able to use the computer, a teletext allows for the verbally challenged to articulate answers or needs, a wheelchair allows the physically disabled to move around and participate in classroom activities, and an alternative keyboard allows for students who have different needs to access the computer.
I think that future students computers will be very student centered, they will be touch screen and different for each student so that all needs are met where all students are able to participate in all lessons no matter their disability.

    2. Five types of assistive technology include, alternative keyboards-ones with larger keys, or touch screen. Assistive speech technology that will read what one types aloud. Screen readers, which read the screen to you. Braille for students that are visually impaired, and Screen enlargers, or screen magnifiers, work like a magnifying glass for the computer by enlarging a portion of the screen which can increase legibility and make it easier to see items on the computer.
I think the classroom of the future will look a lot different than today. As schools start to incorporate more and more technology the classroom layout will begin to change. I like the idea of having learning centers set up around the room. Having several computers in the classroom, a Smart Board, and assistive technologies available for students with special needs will be very beneficial.

  2. There are many forms of assistive technologies. Telecommunication equipment that are used for help with the hearing impaired. for example, TDD devices , which hook to the telephone so deaf people can use the phone. There are hearing aids as well as fM sound systems that attach and block out background noises. For visually impaired there are screen magnifiers and things like screen readers, which actually read aloud for the person. They have audio books that have been around for a longer time than some of the other things. There are cool things they can take notes with like portable Braille devices. For children with disabilities or special needs, there are special computers that are modified to the individual child’s need. If they can not speak there are voice synthesizers that bring sound vibrations so we can hear them talk. There are new inventions that are sure to affect the school classroom setting in the future. If someone can not move or use their hands they have come up with this double foot mouse for the computer. it says it is not being used yet but it will be interesting. The two mouses give one foot a curser and the other clicks. They use digital typing from the screen. In the future I see every student having a palm held device, a notebook laptop or a Ipad with internet And less paperwork. A lot more assignments will be done online and with the use of interactive technology, which we are starting to do now . We might not need to go into a classroom as often , who knows. Would that be a possibility in the future?
